Northumberland Junior Rugby Friendly Festivals 2016

A series of rugby festivals will be held at Percy Park and Whitley Bay Rockcliff throughout September and into October, bringing together the local rugby community.

This weekend sees the first in a trio of Northumberland Junior Rugby Friendly Festivals being held at Percy Park RFC, starting with the under-15 tournament this coming Sunday.

The curtain-raising event has been bringing together clubs from across the region for five years, with over 2,000 players expected to turn out for their respective sides over the course of the three-weekend festival.

Large crowds are expected, too, with as many as 3,000 spectators attending Percy Park and Whitley Bay Rockcliff’s grounds throughout the month and into early October.

The tournament will feature those as young as six right up to the under-16s, showcasing the comprehensive nature of the clubs’ youth development programmes.

“The aim of the festival is to focus on what are considered to be the core values of rugby, namely teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship,” says Percy Park RFC’s Stephen Forster.

“It also allows cross club coaches to establish their new rugby laws for the season, encourages cross club communication, and places our players within an environment where the focus is on celebration of the sport, rather than just winning.”

Wade Financial have served as one of Percy Park’s main sponsors since 2015 and have recently agreed to serve in a similar capacity with Northumberland Junior Rugby.

The financial planning firm are thrilled to see the club partaking in an event which promotes the virtues of community and fair play.

“Events like this show what can be achieved when the county and the clubs adopt the right ethos,” says financial planner Ian Little.

“It played a big part in our decision to support local rugby, as the game itself endorses unity, sportsmanship and camaraderie. That blueprint comes down from Northumberland Junior Rugby and is adopted by clubs like Percy Park, helping children develop their skills in a positive, friendly atmosphere.”

Entry for each festival is £2, and the full itinerary can be found below.
